An architectural treasure that merges history and art

The Royal College of Noble Maidens of Toledo, founded by Cardinal Silíceo in the 16th century, stands out for its innovative vision of offering a high-level education to women from the humble classes, to be good mothers and to give them a human and Christian education. Although initially intended for the young women of the archdiocese of Toledo, the college grew under the co-patronage of Philip II, and in time became one of the most prestigious centres in Europe, accepting maidens of other religions.

This building is an architectural jewel that combines Renaissance and Baroque elements, reflecting the historical and artistic richness of the city.

The chapel-church is the spiritual heart of the college built in Renaissance style with early Baroque elements. It has a Latin cross floor plan with an imposing barrel vault, characteristic of the Renaissance. Its main altarpiece, the work of Alejandro Sémino, is dedicated to the Virgin and Child and features the figure of the founder, Cardinal Silíceo, together with the noble maidens, which underlines the pious and educational nature of the institution.

Inside, the Baroque altarpieces of the Virgen del Pozo and San Jerónimo also stand out. These works complement the decoration of the church and reflect the religious splendour of the period. These altarpieces and the decoration rich in sculptural details, such as Christian virtues and liturgical elements, make the space a place of meditation and veneration.

Another key element is the tomb of Cardinal Silíceo, sculpted by Ricardo Bellver in the Plateresque style. This work is located in the church and represents not only a tribute to the founder, but also a notable example of funerary sculpture of the period, highlighting the representation of Christian virtues and religious symbols that underline the spirituality of the college.

In the upper part we find the choir of the schoolgirls, decorated with delicate grilles containing the Cardinal’s coat of arms, a space where the young maidens took part in religious ceremonies. This space has a sober but detailed decoration, with medallions depicting Toledo saints, creating an atmosphere of recollection and devotion.

The two-storey granite courtyard is another significant piece of architecture, designed by Ventura Rodríguez, a famous 18th-century architect. It is a large space, surrounded by arcades that evoke the calm and serenity of monastic cloisters. Here one can perceive the influence of Renaissance classicism, with clean lines and harmonious proportions that invite contemplation.

This architectural ensemble reflects the educational and religious mission of the college, preserving a historical legacy that has endured to the present day. We invite you to explore this historical marvel with a 360º virtual tour here and discover the details of its chapel, its courtyard and its imposing tomb.
