El Greco and His Masterpiece in Toledo
The Church of Santo Tomé, located in the heart of Toledo, is a temple with centuries of history. Its origins date back to the 12th century when it was built over an old mosque. Over time, it has been renovated and embellished, standing out for its Mudejar tower and the chapel that houses one of the most iconic works of Spanish art: The Burial of the Count of Orgaz by El Greco.
Doménikos Theotokópoulos, better known as El Greco, arrived in Toledo in 1577 and found in the city a place to develop his unique style. Commissioned in 1586, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is a remarkable example of his mastery in depicting the earthly and celestial realms, united in a single scene with unparalleled drama.
The Hands That Tell a Story
One of the most expressive elements of the painting is the hands of its characters. The hands of Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine, delicately holding the body of the Count of Orgaz, not only represent the miracle of the burial but also convey solemnity and reverence. The elongated and detailed anatomy of the hands is characteristic of El Greco’s style.
The hands of the onlookers, with varied gestures, add dynamism and depth. Some are clasped in prayer, others point or hold liturgical objects, reflecting different emotions in response to the event.

One of the most symbolic gestures is the hand of the angel ascending with the soul of the Count of Orgaz in the form of a child, visually connecting the earthly and celestial realms.
