What to see in Cristo de la Luz Mosque
History, architecture and archaeological discoveries in Toledo
Built in 999, Cristo de la Luz Mosque is the oldest standing monument in Toledo. This small building is rich in history and art, offering both similarities and differences with the great mosque of Cordoba.
It represents the essence of islamic Toledo and its relevance to the city’s multiculturalism. The mosque, converted into a church, symbolises the coexistence of civilisations that marked Toledo’s history. In addition, the fascinating legend of the Cristo de la Luz adds a mystical attraction that invites visitors to discover it.
The Bab al-Mardum Mosque, built in 999, is a key monument of hispano-muslim and mudéjar architecture. Originally a caliphate mosque, it was transformed into a church in the 12th century with the addition of a mudéjar apse. The foundation inscription reveals that it was commissioned by Ahmad ibn Hadidi, although it is not known whether its use was private or public.
Located in a prominent neighbourhood near the Alcazaba, its structure suggests that it may have served as a madrasa or mausoleum. After the reconquest, it became the hermitage of the Holy Cross and later the Church of Santa Cruz, its identity rediscovered in the 19th century.
A Toledan monument inspired by the mosque of Cordoba, it has elements such as vaults and horseshoe arches. Its T-shaped floor plan, measuring 8 metres square, is divided into 9 square sections by four reused columns with visigothic capitals.
The brick façades have unique arches and decorative designs. Romanesque paintings in the presbytery include a Panthochrator surrounded by the Tetramorphos. Excavations in 2006 revealed a roman road and a cave under the altar, suggested to be a roman quarry. A missing tower and a christian cemetery complete this archaeological and architectural complex.
