What to see in Jesuits Church (San Ildefonso)

The most impressive baroque temple in Toledo with a double bell tower from which you will have a bird’s eye view of the city.

Its construction lasted more than one hundred years, beginning in 1629 on land acquired by the jesuits of Toledo on the site where St. Ildefonso was born in the year 606.

The promoters of its construction were the Castilian nobles Pedro and Estefanía Manrique, due to their great devotion to San Ildefonso. They acquired the site, where the houses of Juan Hurtado de Mendoza Rojas y Guzmán, Count of Orgaz, were located.

Its enormous dome topped with slate, visible from outside the city due to its large dimensions and the elevation of the land where it is located, is one of the great visual references of Toledo.

History, foundation and baroque splendor in Toledo

The Jesuits Church, built on the birthplace of San Ildefonso, Patron Saint of Toledo, has more than three centuries of history. Opened for worship in 1718, it is notable for its main chapel with an original frescoed altarpiece, framed by columns and trompe l’oeil. The large baroque altarpieces on each side of the central nave narrate the history of the Society of Jesus.

Its twin towers, more than 50 meters high, offer a privileged view of the medieval city and the Primate Cathedral of Toledo, making this church a true museum of sculpture and religious art.

The jesuits settled in Toledo in 1558, thanks to the permission of Archbishop Carranza, and founded the professed house in the Plaza del Salvador. In 1583, they opened the Colegio de San Eugenio. The birthplace of San Ildefonso was purchased in 1569 to build a church and professed house. Donations from Pedro and Estefanía Manrique allowed the project to be expanded.

The church was consecrated in 1718 and completed in 1765, although the jesuits were expelled in 1767. They returned in 1903, but closed their residence in 2011. Today, San Ildefonso Church is a diocesan shrine.

Jesuits Church in Toledo is a magnificent example of Counter-Reformation architecture, with a single nave flanked by interconnected side chapels and an imposing dome over the transept.

Influenced by the Church of the Gesú in Rome, it is inspired by the jesuit churches of Palencia and Alcalá. The baroque lighting directs the light towards the main altar, highlighting the Eucharist. The baroque façade was designed by Francisco Bautista. The altarpieces and sculptures stand out, including works by Germán López Mejía and trompe l’oeil paintings by the Velázquez brothers, creating a museum of sacred art inside the temple.
