History and Art in Santo Tomé: The Church of El Greco
El Greco and Santo Tomé. To speak of Santo Tomé is to mention El Greco and his masterpiece, “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz“. Considered one of the most influential paintings in history, this church is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Spain. Art lovers enjoy the magnificence of the cretan painter’s work.
Santo Tomé also offers visitors the opportunity to explore one of the most historic and artistic churches in Toledo, in which Don Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo contributed to the reconstruction that we have the opportunity to contemplate today.
The parish Santo Tomé Church was founded after the christian reconquest of Toledo by Alfonso VI in 1085, with the first documented mention of it in 1142. Of the original mudejar building, elements such as the large poly-lobed arch and the buttresses that separate the main nave from the presbytery have been preserved. Don Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, notary major of Castile and Count of Orgaz, contributed to its reconstruction and left annual mandates for the church in his will, ordering to be buried there. His burial in 1327 became a legend when it was reported that Saint Augustine and Saint Stephen descended from heaven to place his body in the sepulchre, rewarding his life of charity.
Rebuilt at the beginning of the 14th century, Santo Tomé includes two side naves with a flat chancel, added by Don Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo. Its tower, which still survives today, is inspired by islamic minarets and stands out for its frieze of poly-lobed blind arches. In the 16th century, the chevet was extended with gothic ribbed vaults. In the 17th century, the naves were remodelled and the entrance portico was refurbished, becoming a museum of El Greco in 1972. The temple houses valuable sculptures such as the Virgen de la Sonrisa (Virgin of the Smile) and baroque figures from the 17th century, including the silver monstrance by Claudio Vegué.
