Mudejar Art: the unique fusion of cultures that shaped Spain.

Mudejar Art is an artistic style characteristic of the Iberian Peninsula that developed between the 12th and 15th centuries, in parallel with the Romanesque and the Gothic. Its origin is explained in the context of the Reconquista, when significant Muslim communities remained under Christian rule. These groups, called mudéjares, were allowed to preserve their language, religion, and customs, although with a lower social rank.

Its main uniqueness is the fusion of Islamic elements with christian structures and functions, which makes it an exclusively hispanic phenomenon.

The main centers of the peninsula where this highly regional art is most concentrated are:

  • Sevilla, capital of Al Ándalus since the arrival of the almohades in the middle of the 11th century.

  • Aragón, where the towers and glazed ceramics stand out, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

  • Castilla y León, where arte mudéjar was born in the Leonese city of Sahagún. The Castilian-Leonese mudéjar is characterized by overlapping bands of blind semicircular arches. The doors of the churches imitate Romanesque portals with alfiz, the frame of the Arabic arch that surrounds the outer part of the arch.

  • Toledo, the first city conquered by Alfonso VI, whose first action was to convert the mosques that had been built into Christian worship. In places such as the Sinagogue de Santa María la Blanca or the tower of Santo Tomé, we can observe a great example of this regional art.

Main characteristics of Mudejar Art

Materials

Brick was predominantly used, as it was cheaper, quicker and easier to work with than stone. It was used for building walls as well as for façades and interiors.

The roofs were constructed using a ‘pair and knuckle’ framework, also known as wooden coffering. The framework was made with sloping beams that followed the slope of the roof. These beams rest on the ridge, which is the highest part, and intersect with the beams on the other side of the roof. They are placed quite close to each other and are known as pairs or rafters.

Wood, plaster and glazed ceramics are other additions that allowed for rich decoration at low cost.

Arquitecture

  • Churches, synagogues and palaces with Islamic techniques applied to Christian buildings.
  • Church towers that imitate minarets, tall towers attached to mosques from which the muezzin or almuédano sings to call people to prayer.
  • Extensive use of horseshoe and lobed arches.
  • Façades with archivolts, decorative mouldings that adorn the exterior of an arch, especially in Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
  • Christian (basilica) floor plans but with Muslim ornamentation of one or three naves with their respective semicircular apses.

Decoration

  • Predominance of geometric, plant (ataurique) and epigraphic (decorative writing) ornamentation. This decoration can be found both in the structure of the buildings and in the details of the interior decoration.
  • Use of polychrome tiles to cover walls and floors.
  • Finely carved plasterwork with arabesque motifs.
  • Wooden coffered ceilings with intricate geometric patterns, also known as alfarje.

Mudejar art represents the cultural synthesis of medieval Spain: a testament to how different aesthetic and religious traditions were able to coexist and enrich each other.
