Enjoy the 360º virtual tour of the Santa María La Blanca Synagogue to explore every corner of this impressive Toledo monument, a testament to the city’s cultural coexistence during the Middle Ages.

One of the most beautiful monuments in Toledo’s Jewish Quarter

The interior of the Santa María la Blanca Synagogue in Toledo is a magnificent example of Mudejar art, featuring a fascinating blend of Islamic and Christian architectural elements. It’s a spacious and luminous area, with five aisles separated by a series of octagonal columns topped with horseshoe arches reminiscent of mosque architecture. These arches, along with the columns and capitals, are adorned with geometric and vegetal motifs, giving a sense of lightness and height.

The central aisle is the tallest, with ceilings reaching 12.5 meters, creating a vertical sense that contrasts with the simplicity of the white walls, enhancing the purity of the space. The interior decoration of the Santa María la Blanca Synagogue is an exquisite example of Mudejar art, which combines Muslim and Christian influences. Among the most notable features are the horseshoe arches and the capitals decorated with geometric and vegetal motifs, typical of Islamic architecture. These motifs, known as ataurique, are found at the tops of the columns and are common in Mudejar tradition.

One of the most impressive aspects of the interior is the natural light filtering through small windows, subtly illuminating the details of the arches and decorations on the columns, highlighting the architectural details and carved forms. The sobriety of the white walls contrasts with the ornamental richness of the arches, adorned with interwoven vegetal forms that create intricate patterns, and although it no longer serves its original religious function, the synagogue remains a place inviting contemplation and reflection.

The synagogue’s ceiling is also noteworthy. Though the original ceiling no longer exists, the wooden coffered ceiling that replaces it maintains the Mudejar style, with geometric patterns reminiscent of the lacería technique, another common ornamental feature in Islamic architecture. The floor design, which was likely brick or stone in medieval times, has been restored multiple times while preserving the essence of the site.
